Handball: Historic Portugal
Portugal reaches a milestone in the European EHF 2020 this year. The Portuguese team closed the sixth place of the competition by losing 29-27 with the German counterpart – twice a European champion, three times a world champion and an Olympic champion.
It was a very disputed game by both teams, was intense throughout its duration with Portugal losing a goal difference at the interval by 14-13. The German team failed to differentiate the result by more than three goals, having lost the pace in the final minutes, but never the lead.
Despite the defeat, Portugal secured the best classification ever in European Handball Championships.
The last best classification was the seventh place in the EHF Euro 2000.
With the positive performance of the European, Portugal guaranteed its presence in the Olympic qualifying games to be played from 17 to 19 April, where 6 teams will leave to be present at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“It will be very tough. We will depend a lot on the clubs. If the players are physically prepared, we will be able to compete with anyone ”, declared Paulo Pereira, National Handball Coach.
Olympic Table Tennis
Portugal once again guaranteed its presence in the Olympic Games, this time in Tokyo 2020, by beating Belgium 3-0, in the qualifying tournament in Gondomar.
In teams, Tiago Apolónia and João Monteiro defeated the Belgians Florent Lambiet and Martin Allegro by 3-1 – 12-10, 11-6, 8-11 and 13-11.
In the singles, Maros Freitas beat Cedric Nuytick 3-2 and João Monteiro, Martin Allegro 3-0.
With this victory, Portugal guaranteed not only the presence in the tournament by teams but also two elements of the selection in individual men’s events.
In the last Olympic Games, Rio 2016, the Austrian team eliminated Portugal while Marcos Freitas finished in fifth place.
