Why Street Workout?
A sport that is characterised by an almost unlimited number of exercises
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
To practise street workout exercises, it is first necessary to make a distinction between street workout and calisthenics. The term “calisthenics” comes from the Greek word “kallos” (beautiful) and “sthenos” (strength/heart). This sport consists of doing basic physical exercises (indoors or outdoors), using the weight of your own body, and is suitable for all types of people. Street workout consists of exercising outdoors, using your own body weight or using external weights, on the ground or on bars. In addition to calisthenics exercises, it implements a more acrobatic training style.
FEATURES IN PORTUGAL
In Portugal the sport has attracted quite a few followers. SWA – Portuguese Association of Street Workout and Parkour – was founded on 3 December 2012 by a group of practitioners with a very diverse sporting history and is currently recognised by WSWCF as the governing body of the sport in the country.

Although the origin of the term “calisthenics” is attributed to the gymnast Phokion Heinrich Clias (1782-1854), who published various articles and books on the subject with the aim of creating a sport for everyone, history shows that this type of training was already practised in Greco-Roman antiquity, which valued physical and mental development.
